Human Trafficking Prevention Program

Human trafficking is the #2 issue in Orange County, as well as in the State of California. The Orange County Human Trafficking Task Force was set up to help fight modern-day sex and labor slavery announced it is seeing an increase in the number of victims it helps. In 2018, the task force helped 415 human-trafficking victims and more than 25 percent of those were minors. Out of the total 415, 48 were victims of labor trafficking and 359 were sex trafficking victims, and 6 were victims of both. Two fell into a category of unknown. The more we can educate about this issue, the less prevalent it will be in our community.

Higher Ground is working on the prevention of human trafficking in our community through education and mentorship. We focus on self-esteem, healthy relationships, social media, and human trafficking. The 5-week program in middle schools aims to discuss human trafficking to a demographic that is widely targeted, as well as to build a relationship with the students so they feel comfortable having a trusted mentor at Higher Ground they can turn to.
  • Internship and Volunteer responsibilities include
    • Being trained by the OCHTTF about how to teach human trafficking prevention in middle schools and high schools in the community
    • Attending regular meetings
    • Practicing curriculum presentation
    • Presenting our prevention curriculum in junior high schools and high schools in Anaheim Garden Grove.

Higher Ground Mental Health and Wellness program

In 2019, Higher Ground made a commitment to expand our scope of work to include mental health services based on requests from our community partners. Many families have no health insurance and few treatment options, other than referrals from school psychologists which parents may or may not be able to afford or be willing to pursue. We have established a customized Family Wellness Center in Lincoln Park that provides mental health services to youth and their families who currently participate in Higher Ground, as well as all new families who seek us out or are referred to us by local schools. We provide a safe, healthy, and positive environment for youth and families to seek mental health services. With the help of the Larry & Helen Hoag Foundation, we are able to begin expanding our services to better meet the community need, as well as begin providing a more comfortable and safe space for youth and families to focus on their mental wellness.
